BABEL was a project founded by PSR Toscana whose objective was the study of supply chains and technologies to increase the added value of the primary biomass production in the Start Mugello GAL area, with particular reference to woodchips, agricultural residues and waste from the first processing industries of wood. Biomass pre-treatment technologies were explored with the aim of increasing their energy density and small-scale technologies were studied and tested for decentralized use in order to promote the sustainable and local use of solid biocomponents (briquetting, roasting, slow pyrolysis). The project had the objective of creating intermediate products with a high added value starting from the standard biomass, giving the farmer the possibility of becoming “the first converter” of a superior quality product. To this end, a carbonization pilot plant was designed, developed and built on the specific needs of farms.
